With that in mind, if a child (or adult) is walking toe out, they likely have external tibial or femoral torsion and a supinated foot.\u00a0 See below\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0This is from an article by Volpe:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA gait plate to induce in-toe is rarely used. The biomechanical concept is the same with the distal angulation in the reverse direction. It is most appropriate for a child with an external femoral or tibial torsion without pronation of the foot. However, using an orthosis to control motion of the foot in a child with compensatory pronation will sufficiently reduce abduction and out-toe in most case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.podiatrytoday.com\/article\/894?page=3\">http:\/\/www.podiatrytoday.com\/article\/894?page=3<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/littlestepsfootorthotics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/feet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"feet\" src=\"http:\/\/littlestepsfootorthotics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/feet.jpg\" width=\"135\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/littlestepsfootorthotics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/feet2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"feet2\" src=\"http:\/\/littlestepsfootorthotics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/feet2.jpg\" width=\"152\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">So my concern is that practitioners not confuse an abducted forefoot (associated with foot pronation), with a truly toe out gait from external torsion.\u00a0 See the images above: \u00a0The first picture shows a pronated foot, with flat arches causing an abducted forefoot (ie NOT TRULY TOE OUT).\u00a0 The toe out picture on the right show a true toe out (in this picture would look like external tibial torsion).\u00a0 If the tibia or femor has external torsion, that would supinate the foot and raise the arch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I hope that helps you understand when it is appropriate to use a toe-out git plate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Q:\u00a0How do I know if a toe-out gait plate is appropriate?
